Angola's Nature & Wildlife
Equatorial rainforest in the north, savanna and miombo in the centre, and the world's oldest desert in the south — Angola contains four of Africa's major biomes and the wildlife that depends on them.
The giant sable antelope
Angola's national animal — and one of the rarest large mammals on earth, with a small population in Cangandala National Park (Malanje). After being feared extinct during the war, the species is recovering thanks to dedicated conservation work.
The water-tower of southern Africa
The headwaters of the Okavango, Cuando and Cubango rivers all rise on Angola's central plateau and flow south. Without Angola's rainfall, the Okavango Delta does not exist. The country sits at the heart of southern African ecology.
Iona and the Namib
The Iona National Park in the far south covers part of the Namib desert — older than humanity, home to ancient Welwitschia plants, oryx, springbok and a coastline of fog and shipwrecks. It is the largest park in the country.
