Angola is one of Africa’s least-known surf destinations — and that’s exactly the appeal. World-class waves with virtually no crowds, friendly locals, and a growing surf-camp scene make it ideal for surfers seeking authentic adventure.

Cabo Ledo: Angola’s Premier Surf Spot

Cabo Ledo, two hours south of Luanda, hosts a long left-hand point break that runs for hundreds of meters on the right swell. Considered one of Africa’s best surf points. Best season: May–October when southwest swells are most consistent. Multiple surf camps and beach lodges have opened in recent years.

Other Surf Spots

Buraco — south of Cabo Ledo, harder to access but rewards exploration. Curuca — another Luanda-area break. Sangano — beach break good for beginners. Benguela coast — emerging spots with limited infrastructure. Namibe coast — wild, isolated, for experienced surfers willing to explore.

When to Surf Angola

Best surf is May to October — clear skies, consistent southwest swells, milder temperatures. November to April brings rainy season (warmer water but more variable surf). Big swells from Antarctic storms hit between June and August.

Surf Camps and Lodges

Several Cabo Ledo camps cater to international surfers — package deals include accommodation, meals, surf guiding, and board rentals. Camps fill quickly during peak season; book ahead. Standalone beach lodges also welcome surfers without bundled packages.

What to Bring

Boards — bring your own; rental selection is limited. Pack a 6’2’-7’0’ fish or shortboard for Cabo Ledo. Wetsuit — water is generally 22–24°C; a 2mm shorty or boardshorts work most of the year. Reef booties — useful for some breaks. First aid kit — basic supplies essential.

Getting to Cabo Ledo

Drive 2 hours south of Luanda on the EN100. Most surf camps offer pickup from Luanda airport. Self-drive is possible with a 4x4 — last few km can be sandy.
